Yes, it is true – Samsung Galaxy S3 has been out for more than a year, but last month it got the GSMA award for best smartphone in the world and it is one of the best-selling devices. On the other hand, the new flagship of LG has already bravely challenged many of the best smartphones and has won. Let’s see the Korean 5.5-inch version of LG compared to Samsung Galaxy S3 – you decide which is better.
Design-wise, it is better to get the 4.8” Samsung Galaxy S3, if you need something handy that you will be able to use with one hand. Samsung Galaxy S3 is with rounded angles, it is compact and light and you will have no problems handle it. On the other hand, LG Optimus G Pro is as light and compact as the 5.5” display allows it and its side bezel is the smallest possible. It is a lot taller than Samsung Galaxy S3, but not too wider, so if you have really long fingers, you may be able to operate with it with one hand. Problem will be the use of the back key, which is traditionally put on the left by LG. Both the LG and the Samsung are made of plastic and their batteries are swappable, which is allowed by the removable covers (which are glossy by the way). LG Optimus G Pro will offer you two features that are not present in Samsung Galaxy S3. One of them is the physical QButton that is able to launch any app you assign to it; the other is the infrared sensor that can be used as a remote control for TVs and other devices.
Well, what is obvious about the displays is that LG Optimus G Pro sports a 5.5” display (the version for Japan is 5”), while Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8” screen. The resolution of the former is Full HD ad the pixel density is 401 ppi. The resolution of the latter is 720×1080 and it offers 306 pixels per inch. Samsung Galaxy S3 oversaturates the colours, making them gaudy, while LG Optimus G Pro offers more natural, more vivid colours. Moreover, out in the sun, the low brightness of Samsung Galaxy S3 will make it useless, while LG Optimus G Pro has a low screen reflection and is twice as bright as the Samsung, so the sunlight won’t be a problem. And don’t you forget that you are comparing a Super Amoled to an IPS-LCD display. However, both of them are with great viewing angles.
When it comes to hardware, LG Optimus G Pro has the best processor used in a mobile device ever – Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, clocked at 1.7GHz. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S4 employs a quad-core processor Exynoss 4412 at 1.4GHz for the international version and a dual-core Snapdragon at 1.5GHz rate for the versions in the USA. The benchmark talk for themselves that LG Optimus G Pro performs better, but either of the devices handles its Jelly Bean seamlessly. The other specifications are the following: 2GB for LG Optimus G Pro and 1GB for the international Samsung Galaxy S3 version; LG has 32GB of storage capacity while Samsung Galaxy S3 has only 16, but the devices support microSD. Both Samsung Galaxy S3 and LG Optimus G Pro support 4G LTE and HSPA+, but those of LG are faster (and besides that G Pro has a multi-band 4G radio integrated in the chipset). If we compare the battery, LG Optimus G Pro has a 3140mAh one to supply its beasty screen, while Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 2100mAh battery.
Speaking of the cameras, LG Optimus G Pro has a 13MP main shooter, while Samsung Galaxy S3 sports only an 8MP one. The phones support HDR for pictures and the LG have this option for the videos, too. Moreover, LG Optimus G Pro offers virtual (360 degrees) panorama and simultaneous video recording through the rear and front camera. Both the videos capture Full HD video at 30 frames per second. You can see example videos below this section.
Both Samsung Galaxy S3 and LG Optimus G Pro come with Jelly Bean, but the former has tuned it to become the traditional Optimus UI, while Samsung uses its trademark – Nature UX. The advantage of LG Optimus G Pro is that it offers a dedicated landscape mode for its system. The multi-tasking in the devices is highly developed, especially with the QButton of LG. All in all, when comparing the software, the devices are perfect the way they are and will offer you everything that you need.
To cut a long story short, LG Optimus G Pro is really better than Samsung Galaxy S3, but it is a year newer, too. However, if you want something more earthly, get the Samsung – you will be able to operate it with one hand and to easily carry it around with you. However, the new technologies are undoubtedly employed in LG Optimus G Pro and it will provide you with the perfect mobile experience. We don’t know when the flagship of the Korean company will be available for the USA, but let’s hope it will be soon and both the 5” and the 5.5” versions will be available.
